269. CLUSTER PLANTING Page 305 MODERN ARBORICULTURE
Consider planting clusters of trees, shrubs, vines, and all other plants you would find in the forest type nearest your area. Cluster planting works well in parks, golf courses, and on college and university campuses. The cluster has many advantages over formal designs or widely spaced trees. Walkways can be made away from the clusters. This makes it safer for people walking by because there are no large trees near paths where other people could hide. The cluster greatly decreases the compaction problem and the lawnmower wounding problem. The clusters also can be used as educational demonstrations. The cluster would represent a small part of a natural area. The cluster could be surrounded by wild flowers. The possibilities are endless. Think about it! Try it.
