Magnesium  - Magnesium is an element.  Chlorophyll is a molecule that starts the energy trapping process. The molecule has magnesium [Mg] at its center with 4 nitrogen [N] atoms bonded to it.   See page 238 MA.   Elements other than nitrogen such as calcium and magnesium, also accumulate in decomposing woody substrate.  (Maser and Trappe, 1984, pg 16-par2)
