Root Plasmolysis  - When nonwoody roots growing from woody roots, are suddenly surrounded by ions from fertilizers, the water in the nonwoody roots flows outward, and the root will die if the cells are plasmolysed.  This phenomenon is easy to see on grass and annuals; but not so easy to recognize on mature trees.
