Dormant Buds  - On some trees, smaller buds form to the sides of larger buds. The smaller buds may remain dormant for several growing periods.  Do not confuse with meristematic points.  See "Meristematic Points."  Picture to left: Stem (reddish) to left of bud, represents a bud that opened. Bud you see in center did not open and remains dormant.

Dormant Buds are buds.  Buds are organs with preformed parts within.  Dormant Buds are buds that do not grow at the onset of growth.  They may grow later in the growing period, but seldom beyond a year.  Please see "Buds".
